When lodging an enquiry, you will need to share details about your job so that the relevant asset owners can understand what sort of work you’ll be doing and when. The asset owners rely on this information to help prevent damage to their infrastructure.
A short video is available here demonstrating the Lodge Enquiry flow.
After you’ve finished drawing your job site, the enquiry details panel will appear automatically.
If you want to make changes to the job site, click on Draw again to return to the map. Any enquiry details you’ve already filled in will be saved until you’ve updated the sketch.
Approximate address
The approximate address of the job site is calculated automatically based on the centre point of your drawing. You can keep this address or edit it yourself. You can’t edit the suburb or postcode though.
Work locations
Click on the work locations menu to choose from the categories of workplaces. You must select at least one option and should choose all that apply.

Job dates
Fill in the start and end dates for your works. You can indicate that your works are intended to start today but remember that you must wait until you have received all the plans from affected asset owners before commencing any excavation activities.
If your job end date is more than 28 days in the future, you will be shown the Auto-renew options. You can read more about auto-renew here.
Activity types
The activity types information lets asset owners know what sort of works you’ll be undertaking near their assets. This helps the asset owners determine the most appropriate ways to prevent damage to their infrastructure.
First up, select from Design or Excavation. Are you seeking information to support your planning phase or are you going to be doing the work?
Based on your design or excavation selection, choose from the list of activities that you intend to undertake. You can select more than one activity and should include all that apply to your job.

Working on behalf of
Much of the work performed is done by, or on behalf of, the BYDA members themselves. This menu includes all members who have an interest in the area of your job.
If the organisation you are working for is not on the list, select Other and then type in the name. If this work is being done privately – for example, home renovations – select the Private option.
Your reference and notes
These two fields are optional. Use the Your reference field to add your own identifier to the job so that you can easily match the right BYDA enquiry for your work. Your reference is displayed throughout SmarterWX Sentinel and included in email communications.
Note that if you don’t supply your reference, it will default to being the first line of the approximate job site address.
The Notes field can be used to share information about your job with the asset owners potentially affected by your works. Add any additional information that you think might be useful to minimize the risk of damage or harm for your job, but never assume that all asset owners will actively read these notes.
Finally, click Submit to submit your enquiry.
One more thing
If this is your first Before You Dig enquiry, you might be asked to share some information about you. This information is important as asset owners may need to contact you to discuss your plans and make sure everything is being done to minimise the risk of damage or harm on your job.
Don’t worry, we store this information on your user profile so that you won’t need to enter it every time. (Although we might check in from time-to-time to make sure nothing has changed).
