Emails sent from the BYDA referral service are tracked to ensure they are successfully delivered. When reviewing the delivery of emails there are a range of different statuses used. This article gives the meaning for each status.
Processed
This event fires when first sends a message and prepares it to be delivered.
Delivered
When an email has been accepted at the receiving server, the delivered event fires. The receiving server must still decide what to do with the message (eg. deliver to an inbox, send to spam or junk).
Open
This event fires when your email is viewed, provided they have images turned on. Like all email service providers, Sentinel uses a transparent image beacon to test for opened messages. Some email clients trigger this event as soon as the email is received as part of pre-processing (e.g. Gmail) and may be fired before a user has actually read the email.
Click
The click indicates a user has followed a link in the email. Your call to action asks the recipient to click a link. Sentinel tracks that interaction and records a click event.
Deferred
This is when an email can’t immediately be delivered, but hasn’t been completely rejected. Sentinel will continue to try to deliver for 72 hours before giving up.
Bounce
If a server cannot or will not deliver a message, Sentinel fires a bounce event. Bounces often are caused by outdated or incorrectly entered email addresses, so this event can help you ensure that your email lists are up to date. Full mailboxes may also trigger bounce events.
Dropped
There are a few reasons your email would not even be sent to a recipient for delivery, eg. spam content. This event informs you when an email has been dropped and the email service will not make any further attempt to deliver it.
Spam report
Most ISPs provide a feedback loop, sending specific spam complaints to the Email Service Providers. When Sentinel receives a notice, we record a spam event. When users report a high number of spam complaints this might make it impossible to deliver future messages as they will be dropped.
